Netflix Has Pledged to Cut Down on Smoking
Depictions of smoking are up on TV, and Netflix is a massive offender. And they’re promising to cut down. A report by the Truth Initiative says tobacco use is up on TV in general. But it’s WAY worse on Netflix, thanks to shows like “House of Cards”, “Orange is the New Black”, and especially “Stranger Things” which is particularly troubling since it’s geared toward younger audiences.
The study even took place before Season 3 of “Stranger Things”, which once again contains a bunch of smoking.
After the report came out, Netflix said it’s going to start cutting out smoking and e-cigarette use except for, quote, “reasons of historical or factual accuracy” or cases where it’s quote, “essential to the creative vision of the artist or because it’s character-defining.”
They will also include warnings of tobacco use in their ratings, so people can make informed decisions about what they watch.
